Proper warehouse lighting is essential for both operation and safety. It provides adequate visibility, allows goods to be handled safely, reduces the risk of accidents and helps raise productivity.

What warehouse lighting must do

We design each lighting system to the needs of the specific space – it depends on the size of the hall, whether it is an open warehouse or a racked one, where the workstations are and how reflective the surfaces are. A warehouse running around the clock has different requirements from one that operates only during the day.

Uniformity in the aisles

Racks cast shadows. Luminaires with rack-aisle optics light the lower shelves too, with no dark spots or shadows.

Accurate colour rendering

Sorting and picking goods is easier under lighting with a colour rendering index of Ra > 80.

Safe movement

Forklifts, ramps and aisle crossings need enough light without glare. Emergency modules keep the light on even during a power failure.

Light only where it is needed

Most of the time, most warehouse aisles are empty. Sensors and dimming cut consumption by further tens of percent.

How much light a warehouse needs

The required illuminance is set by EN 12464-1 according to what is done in each part of the warehouse. An unmanned rack aisle needs a fraction of what dispatch or packing needs. That is exactly why it pays to design lighting by zone and control it with sensors.

The values are indicative. We determine the exact value for your zones in the lighting calculation, including uniformity and glare.

Which luminaire for which warehouse

We choose the luminaire type by ceiling height, rack layout and environment – as a rule of thumb, linear luminaires up to 6 m and high-efficiency high-bay luminaires above 6 m. For warehouses we most often start from these three groups.

Lighting controls: where a warehouse saves the most

Most of the time, most warehouse aisles are empty. Lighting controls therefore bring bigger savings here than in any other type of space: motion sensors switch full light on only in the aisle where work is going on, and daylight dimming at the gates and in dispatch makes use of what comes in from outside. In Dolné Vestenice we programmed DALI dimming and sensor switching of hall sections this way – total energy savings reached 60 %.

Case study

Production and warehouse premises in Dolné Vestenice

We provided the client with a complete lighting replacement service, including removal of the old luminaires, installation of the new ones and programming of the controls. Using a DIALux simulation we designed the layout, number and wattage of the luminaires so that every hall reaches the required illuminance and uniformity. DALI daylight dimming brought additional savings.

Answers to what customers ask us most often about warehouse lighting.

How much does warehouse lighting cost?

The price depends on the size and height of the warehouse, the number and spacing of racks, the illuminance required in each zone and the extent of the controls. You will receive the exact price together with the savings and payback after a site survey and a DIALux calculation.

How many lux should a warehouse have?

According to EN 12464-1, roughly 100 lx in storage areas, 150 lx in manned rack aisles and on loading ramps, 200 lx in continuously manned storage areas and 300 lx in dispatch and packing.

Why do rack aisles need special optics?

A standard luminaire emits light over a wide angle and most of it lands on top of the racks. Rack-aisle optics direct the light into a narrow strip along the aisle, so the lower shelves are lit evenly too – with fewer luminaires and lower wattage.

Which luminaires for a cold store or freezer?

For freezer rooms we supply LENA ECO+ linear luminaires in a special version rated down to −40 °C, or LINUS luminaires for extreme temperatures. Standard luminaires fail quickly in freezing conditions, as the project at the Kipa food wholesale warehouse showed.

How much do sensors reduce consumption?

More in a warehouse than in any other space. Aisles where nobody is moving stay at a maintenance level and full light comes on when a forklift or worker arrives. In Dolné Vestenice and Partizánske the controls delivered total savings of 60 – 65 %.

Do we have to stop operations during installation?

Usually not. We work aisle by aisle and zone by zone, outside dispatch peaks, at weekends or at night. We always agree the schedule so that it suits you as well as possible.

What warranty do you provide?

3 to 10 years on luminaires, depending on type.
