Gas station lighting
A gas station is lit around the clock, and at night a driver sees it from a distance long before the prices on the totem sign. A bright, evenly lit canopy pulls customers in, the dispensers have to be clearly visible for refuelling and payment, and the area around them has to be safe.
For gas station operators we design and supply LED lighting for the whole site – recessed luminaires for canopies, dispenser lighting, luminaires for the shop, street lighting for the approach road and the parking area, and Ex-rated luminaires wherever the environment calls for them.

What gas station lighting has to do
A gas station brings the road, the parking area, the fuel dispensers and the shop together on one site. Every part needs a different kind of light – and together they have to look like one scheme, so that at night the station attracts drivers rather than dazzling them.
Visible from the road
A bright, evenly lit canopy is the best advertising a station has. The driver sees it from a distance and knows straight away that it is open.
Light at the dispensers
At the dispensers customers need to see the display, the nozzle and the payment terminal clearly. Vertical light on the sides of the dispenser matters just as much as light on the ground.
Safety and CCTV
Even light with no dark corners across the whole site helps the camera system, and people feel safer at the station even at midnight.
Round-the-clock operation
The station is lit all night, every night. Luminaires with high efficacy and a long service life save on energy and on maintenance work above the traffic lanes.
How much light a gas station needs
The requirements for the outdoor parts of a station are set by EN 12464-2 and those for the shop by EN 12464-1. The most light is needed at the dispensers and the service points, where customers refuel, top up air or water and pay.
The values are indicative. We determine the exact solution for your station – including uniformity and glare – in a lighting calculation.
| ILLUMINANCE | PART OF THE STATION |
|---|---|
| 5 – 10 lx | parking and standing areas |
| 20 – 50 lx | entrance and exit – depending on the brightness of the surroundings |
| 150 lx | dispensers, air and water points, service areas |
| 300 lx | shop (up to 500 lx at the till) |
Which luminaires suit a gas station
Every part of the station has its own luminaire. Recessed luminaires light the canopy, downlights and panels the shop, and street lighting luminaires the approach road and the parking area.

Canopy above the dispensers
Recessed luminaires
PASKAL ECO 53, 71 and 89 W with an efficacy of up to 176 lm/W, IP 65 rating and IK 08 impact resistance. Recessed into the canopy soffit, with DALI dimming and a 5-year warranty.

Shop and bistro
Downlights and panels
DORIS ECO for suspended ceilings, PRIUS PRO panels with low glare and TOBY II track luminaires to highlight the shelving and the food counter.
Explosive atmospheres: where an Ex-rated luminaire is needed
Around the dispensers, the tanks and the vent pipes, fuel vapours can create an explosive atmosphere. Exactly where the zones lie, and which luminaires may be used in them, is set out in the explosion protection document for the individual station. For these areas we supply ATEX-certified luminaires.
- FOX floodlight certified for zones 1 and 21
- VULCAN luminaire for zones 1, 21 and 2, 22
- LENA Ex linear luminaire for plant rooms
- IP 66 rating and impact resistance up to IK 10
- standard luminaires outside the zones, with no needless cost for Ex-rated versions
- a design based on the explosion protection document
Case study
The Dalioil gas station network
For Dalitrans, the operator of the Dalioil gas stations, we have supplied lighting for dispensers, shops and station sites since 2011. The fuel dispensers in Dubnica nad Váhom and Nemšová are lit by 70 W LED floodlights with a 120° beam angle, and the station in Turčianske Teplice by 50 W recessed luminaires with a colour temperature of 5,000 K. The shops are lit by 20 W recessed LED luminaires, and the site and approach road by 30 W LED street lighting luminaires and floodlights.

FAQ
What gas station operators ask us.
How much light is needed at the dispensers?
At fuel dispensers and service points, EN 12464-2 sets a maintained illuminance of 150 lx. Vertical light on the sides of the dispenser matters too, so that the customer can see the display and the terminal clearly.
Do canopy luminaires need Ex certification?
It depends on whether they fall within a hazardous area. The zones are defined in the explosion protection document for the individual station. Luminaires outside the zones can be standard ones; inside them we supply FOX, VULCAN or LENA Ex with ATEX certification.
How much does switching to LED save?
On the approach to the Fuel station we replaced 250 W sodium discharge lamps with 56 W luminaires – the power input dropped by 78%. With round-the-clock operation, the change shows up on the bill immediately. We calculate the savings for your station in the quotation.
Which colour of light suits a gas station?
For the canopy, neutral to daylight white at 4,000 – 5,000 K is the most common choice, as it looks clean and bright. In the shop and bistro it can be warmer, for a more welcoming feel.
Can the lighting be replaced without closing the station?
Yes. We change the canopy in stages so that at least some of the dispensers are always working, and we do the shop off peak or at night.
Can the lighting be dimmed?
The PASKAL ECO recessed luminaires have DALI, so on quiet nights the canopy can run at a lower level and go to full output when a car pulls in. The site and the parking area can also use the autonomous dimming built into the street lighting luminaires.
