Nicole Bat luminaires are among the products of the Dutch company Innolumis Public Lighting. The luminaires themselves, the LEDs and the associated electronics are designed so that their minimum service life is 100,000 hours, i.e. approximately 25 years.
Luminaire maintenance
The anti-static powder coating prevents dirt from settling on the luminaire as far as possible. Maintenance is limited to cleaning the luminaire, because the light sources never need to be replaced.
The Nicole Bat concept
Luminaires in the Nicole Bat range use amber-coloured LEDs, which emit no UV radiation. They are suited to areas where bats are present. These rare nocturnal creatures are sensitive to light – public lighting in particular can cause them painful glare. In designing and manufacturing the Nicole Bat luminaires the manufacturer drew on the Rijkswaterstaat study (2012), which found that bats are especially sensitive to blue and ultraviolet light. Orange and red colour spectra are far less disruptive.
What does unsuitable public lighting do to bats?
- Faster bat species are drawn by the higher concentration of insects around luminaires, so they gather artificially near lights in parks, gardens and streets…
- Slower species avoid light because they easily fall prey to predators.
- The structure of the bat community changes.
- Feeding time is shortened – lighting near their roosts makes them emerge later.
- Young are smaller and, with lower fat reserves, often do not survive hibernation.
- Lighting along roads and rivers creates barriers that some bat species cannot cross, which leaves colonies isolated.
- Insects become overabundant (in a single night a bat eats up to 3,000 mosquitoes and other harmful insects).
- The whole ecosystem is affected – and the consequences reach much further.
Components used
Nicole Bat street luminaires are fitted with a driver from Mean Well, which guarantees a constant power supply to the LEDs. On request, the luminaires can be fitted with a dimmable driver with a pre-programmed dimming schedule. The LEDs used are developed and manufactured in the Netherlands.
Nicole Bat luminaires are also available in the Mini Nicole and Maxi Nicole versions. For more information on dimensions and specifications, do not hesitate to contact us.

* The luminous flux stated already includes the losses in the luminaire (we do not state the luminous flux of the LED chips alone). The luminous flux depends on the chosen colour temperature (in kelvins) – the higher the temperature, the greater the luminous flux. [3,000 K = warm white (WW), 4,000 K = neutral white (NW), 5,000 K = daylight white (DW), 6,000 K = cool white (CW)]
